Students Operating CNC Digital Fabrication Equipment in Boatshop

The new ShopBot CNC digital fabrication equipment is up and running with Erie high school students in the Bayfront Maritime Center Boatshop. These kids are learning valuable 21st century workplace skills. First they design a project using a Computer Aided Design (CAD) program. This data is then converted into a Computer Numeric Control (CNC) toolpath to run the digital fabrication machine.

Maritime Educator, Harold Rinn, is leading the digital fabrication component in the boatshop. He has 25 years of experience inCAD design with General Electric and Rail Power, and is good at sharing this with our students.

The CNC Machine greatly enhances our ability to prepare students for the global economy and the high tech jobs of the future. It also helps these young adults to become aware of the many possible career paths available to them. This is hands-on STEAM, Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math, training at its best.
